The Canada Day Holiday
In Canada, the 1st of July means one thing - celebration! It's time for BBQs, parties, fireworks, parades and concerts all in celebration of Canada's Birthday! Canada Day is a federal holiday included in the Employment Standards Act. If July 1st falls on a weekend day, most Canadian citizens and residents have the next working day off, and most banks and offices will also be closed.
Canada Day is a loved holiday across the nation. Religious beliefs, age or social status don't matter - Canada Day is a time to celebrate for everyone! It is a patriotic holiday, a time to show pride in this beautiful country. Some of the most popular events organized include outdoor festivals and concerts, fireworks, parades and private parties. Not surprisingly, the main city for Canada Day Festivities is Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Thousands of Canadians travel to Ottawa to participate in various exciting events marking their country's birthday, such as fireworks on Parliament Hill, live concerts with Canadian performers, the RCMP musical ride, face painting, circus, or the Guard Change Ceremony. During this special day the Ottawa city centre is closed for traffic, but free shuttles safely connecting all stations are available for visitors.
If you are looking for an alternative to Ottawa for a Canada Day celebration you will not be short of options. Most cities are organizing their own public events and most of them are free or low cost. If you like fireworks you will most probably have an excellent display without going far. Bring a blanket for sitting and enjoy! In Toronto, at Mel Lastman Square there are always big celebrations - spectacular fireworks and live entertainment. On average 20 000 people attend this event in Toronto every year.
If you live on the West coast, Canada Place is a great option for the celebration of the country's birthday. You can enjoy the traditional fireworks, or see Canada's National Anthem singing contest, an event for which it is advisable to purchase tickets in advance through the Ticketmaster. East-coasters also know how to party when it comes to the birthday of their country! If you are in the Halifax area be sure to visit Citadel Hill. There will be live events and shows, a parade, and you can also have a delicious pancake breakfast!
Wherever you are, Canada Day is a great day to celebrate!
